I’m generally a positive person. But we all have our moment. And my moments can be pretty dramatic.
Over the years I’ve learned to get out of these funks as quickly as possible. I refer to it as my ability to defunkify and I’ll tell you how you can do it too.Defunkify (verb): the ability to get out of a funk as quickly as possible. Click To Tweet
Earlier this month, my husband, Jer and I were out cycling on a 70 degree November day. In Minnesota, we make the most of these warm days. Especially when it’s supposed to be winter.
I was looking forward to our ride all morning. By the time Jer had fixed the previous day’s blowout, the wind had picked up. The wind was coming straight out of the south and we were riding a north/south river route.
Halfway through our ride, I was feeling pretty tired and frustrated. I yelled, “Pull over right now.” Jer pulled off the road and said, “what’s wrong?” I said, “EVERYTHING!” (I told you I can be dramatic.)
I was tired from riding straight into the wind, my lips were cracking, and my nose was dripping. I just needed a break. I put on some lip balm, whined about the wind and mustered up the strength to start riding again.
Some days are just hard!
No matter what these days throw at us, we always have a choice. We can let these moments ruin our entire day, or we can choose to defunkify. We can let these moments ruin our entire day, or we can choose to defunkify. Click To Tweet

Although my lips were on fire and my nose wouldn’t stop dripping, I tried to focus on the good things. Like how nice the warm sun felt on my legs. I felt grateful that I was able to ride with my husband after he had been traveling all week. And was ecstatic to find that one of our favorite roads, that was closed for construction, was passable again.
Once we were finished, I focused on the good times and forgot about my meltdowns. Next time you need to defunkify, take a moment to count your blessing.
Being able to laugh at yourself is another great skill. I realized I was being ridiculous and dramatic and got a good laugh out of it. I even shared my meltdown on Instagram.
